Improving The View is where I will be blogging about updating my home and furniture, which you might think would be boring, until you realize I live with a husband whose taste in interior decor is the direct opposite of mine. In his world, wood must never be painted, even if it’s the ugly, orange oak of yore, while to me, almost all wood is open to paint. He thinks, “why bother repainting a room, when it’s fine as it is?” while I could change our wall colours every three months if I could. He’s okay with blank walls while I itch to fill them up. I grumble when, at 3am, there are no new entries in the “free” section of Craigslist, while at 3am, he’s sleeping. And I’m not, because I’m too busy thinking of painting that wooden cupboard we have in the hallway, or wondering if I should go and try setting up the compressor and paint sprayer I bought, 3 years ago.
In almost 20 years together, we have never painted the walls of the homes we lived in, because we could not agree on paint colour. (I did rebel one year and painted a bad-ass faux brick wall when I was in my Debbie Travis phase, though). We’ve only mutually agreed on 3 pieces of furniture. THREE! And that was only in the last 3 years or so. Which means I am breaking past his defenses, right? Come along as I blog about how I plan to update the “ugly”(to me) while convincing him it’s actually a good idea.
He’s a good man, though. He’s given up part of the garage so I can fill it up with my projects. He doesn’t know it yet, but I’m planning on blogging about how he grumbles about having to step over half-finished projects and how I always seem to ask him to move things when there’s a hockey game on. I’m planning to learn more about power tools and other thingamajiggies that can help beautify our space, and I’m hoping you’ll chip in with ideas and suggestions as well because God knows, we need it.
